They deem you as a statue, I hail you as a woman

Art Curators Paris Kapralos and Vera Katranidou, in collaboration with ARTgrID and 42 visual artists from Greece and abroad, present an exhibition on the occasion of International Women’s Day (March 8), during which the exhibition titled “They deem you as a statue, I hail you as a woman” was inaugurated. The exhibition is hosted at Luminous Eye Gallery (Mitsaion 2A, Acropolis area, Athens 117 42) until March 17, 2024. Additionally, the exhibition will be available in digital format on this website until April 17, 2024.

International Women’s Day, celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide, is widely recognized as an opportunity to acknowledge women’s achievements towards equality, raise societal awareness on related issues, and encourage further action. However positive the message of March 8th may be, it remains somewhat overshadowed by the grim reality of daily life, as gender stereotypes persist with schematic representations attributing supposed “natural” characteristics to women and men, based on generalizations and subjective oversimplifications. Violence against women remains a growing global epidemic. Economic inequality and disparities in wages persist, while women’s access to and participation in the full spectrum of political, professional, and social life is still undermined. The lack of equality in education and limited access to science and technology pose further obstacles. Inspired by a verse from Kiki Dimoula, “Everyone calls you directly a statue, / I address you directly as a woman” (from the poem titled “Sign of Recognition – a woman statue with tied hands”, collection “The little of the world”, published by Stigmi Publications – inspired by the marble sculpture “Northern Epirus” by Konstantinos Seferlis, 1951, located in the park next to the Archaeological Museum of Athens depicting a tied woman), we propose that the issue transcends Law or Ethics. We suggest that promoting human civilization through gender equality is not simply a social demand but a fundamental parameter for the development and well-being of all.
