The most common and familiar meaning of the word ‘Epoch’ refers to the four seasons of the year: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. However, it can also refer to a historical period with distinct characteristics, cultural trends, or socio-political conditions – for example, we speak of the ‘Bronze Age’ or the ‘Enlightenment Era.’ Equally, it is included in more contemporary expressions, referring to any period characterized by common conditions, such as the ‘Internet Age’ or the ‘era of globalization.’ Additionally, it can be used on a more personal level, where the ‘age of youth’ or ‘age of maturity’ is referenced. In common parlance, it adds a more abstract dimension, referring to a moment of particular significance, such as in the phrase ‘the age of great change.’ The word ‘Epoch’ derives from the ancient Greek verb ‘ἐπέχειν’ (epéchein), which literally means ‘to hold back,’ ‘to restrain,’ or ‘to suspend,’ carrying the meaning of suspension or cessation, with different meanings depending on the context. For example, in Stoic philosophy, ‘Epoché’ was associated with the suspension of judgment or opinion, a central concept for the practice of self-restraint. From the Stoics, it passed the baton to the modern era in Husserl’s phenomenology theory – a process – according to this theory – that aims to suspend prejudice: it is the technique through which the subject avoids the automatic acceptance of external phenomena as objective truth, facing reality from a more impartial perspective. The process of Epoché aims to free man from prejudice and pave the way for a deeper and more authentic understanding of human experience.
