Monday, January 16, 2023ARC – Art Revisited Collective, its founder and curator Paris Kapralos, and the participating artists in the art project of the same name, present the exhibition of environmental contemplation titled “Before the Last Halcyon Days”. They invite you to visit the exhibition during its duration at the Chili Art Gallery (13-15 Dimofontos Street, Thissio, Athens) from January 19 to January 28, 2023.

During the last week of the exhibition, it will be presented online on our platform. The online exhibition will last longer than the physical exhibition in Athens and will extend until February 28, 2023.

The exhibition includes works of painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, installations, visual objects, and digital art. The artists aim to contribute to the reflection of our values and daily practices, leading to a harmonious model of existence in human society. The project and the exhibition are part of the ongoing initiative Artists4Art.

Mr. Kapralos notes in the exhibition documentation: “The planet does not wait for us to resolve our differences. It is an ecosystem, and an ecosystem means balance: if disturbed, it will seek a new balance, even if that means the eradication of life. In recent years, we have increasingly faced natural disasters, massive losses in lives and structures, but primarily, the degradation of our living conditions. Unprecedented epidemics (COVID-19, AIDS, SARS, bird flu, swine flu, mad cow disease, Zika, Ebola), environmental diseases and allergies, global warming, extreme weather events – consequences of climate response to ruthless human intervention, greenhouse effect, atmospheric pollution, water pollution, waste that the ecosystem cannot decompose, deforestation, decrease in biodiversity – these issues do not occupy our daily lives until they personally affect us, each and every one of us, directly threatening or destroying our lives. The natural environment has become unrecognizable. The climatic distinct seasons of the last decade are disappearing. What remains stable (for now) are the Halcyon Days. The appearance of the Halcyon Days today refers to the period between mid-December and mid-February, a period that contains the mythological connection to the breeding period of the Halcyon birds in January. From a meteorological point of view, there is an equating of pressures between Northern Europe and the region of Greece and Southeast Europe, resulting in an anti-cyclonic situation with calm and summery conditions in the heart of Winter. Recent research has shown that the Halcyon Days were a consistent meteorological phenomenon during the 5th and 4th centuries BC, from January 15 to February 15. Although there have been years without “Halcyon Days,” the phenomenon persists in defiance of climate change and is today one of the few climatic “constants” of the Southeast Mediterranean. It is good to recognize the problem in its true dimensions before rushing to solve it. It is good to hurry to solve the problem before it annuls our lives. It is good to reconsider the terms of our lives before we irreparably damage our environment. It is important to face the “monster” head-on before the last Halcyon Days”.

The exhibition features works by visual artists: Eleni Tsotsorou, Sotiria Alevizou, Petros F. Philippou, Eleftheria Emmanouil, Gerasimos Alifragkis, Sophia Fountoulaki, Elena Arsenidou, Pinelopi Volterra, Olga Barmazi, Maro Kanellopoulou, Eleni Protogerou, Giorgos Papadokotsolis, Christoula Karagouni, Vicky Konstantinopoulou, Nagia Paschali, Olga Tsamoutali, Martha Kollia, Giuliana Vasilakou, Vasiliki Deftereou, Chara Efthymiopoulou, Konstantina Boua, Roza Pappa Vezirtzi, Eva Anastopoulou, Vasilis Komninos, Giorgos Chatzivasileios, Olga Zafiropoulou.

About ARC – Art Revisited Collective
ARC – Art Revisited Collective was founded in May 2018 by visual artists living and working in Greece and Cyprus, as well as the Athenian curator Paris Kapralos. The collective is independent and self-funded. It presents a variety of activities, organizes its own exhibitions, participates in international events, and occasionally collaborates with other groups, collectives, curators, venues, and artists from various art forms and around the world. The collective encompasses all kinds and styles of art. Most members have had a significant personal presence in the art world before joining as a collective entity. Through ARC, they unite their forces in joint projects and individually, often responding to the challenges of the times in their own unique ways.
