Color in the Water 10 | Heterotopia

The art curator Paris Kapralos, in collaboration with 24 painters from Greece and abroad, invites you to visit the exhibition “Color in Water 10 | Heterotopia,” hosted at Chili Art Gallery (Dimofontos 13-15, Thissio, Athens) until Saturday, December 28, 2024. The exhibition is also available online in collaboration with ARTgrID until New Year’s Day 2025.
The exhibition, which explores the relationship between humans and landscapes through different perspectives, is the 10th iteration of the series “Color in Water.” This series aims to highlight contemporary watercolor art in Greece. In the curatorial note, it is stated: *“Painting in general, and watercolor in particular, has contributed over the past two centuries to the reinvigoration of the search for the ideal between natural and urban landscapes. Michel Foucault, with his theory of ‘Heterotopia,’ also approached the concept of space, introducing the idea that certain spaces, such as cities, function as ‘other’ spaces within society—spaces where social norms are overturned or expressed in alternative ways. Cities as heterotopias serve as places where social relationships can be reconsidered or restructured, highlighting the complexity of urban life. One of the most well-known theories related to the impact of natural environments on mental health is the Biophilia Hypothesis, introduced by Edward O. Wilson in 1984, which posits that humans have an innate tendency to connect with nature and living systems. A lack of contact with natural environments can lead to psychological issues such as anxiety and depression, while exposure to natural landscapes can have therapeutic properties. Moreover, the Attention Restoration Theory (ART), developed by Rachel and Stephen Kaplan in the 1980s, suggests that natural environments help restore depleted attention by offering opportunities for effortless focus and mental energy renewal. This theory has been widely applied to the study of human-nature relationships, underscoring the psychological value of natural landscapes in daily life.”* .
