Eleni Tsotsorou -Pop Angst

“The title of the series “Pop Angst” conveys a state of contradiction. On one hand, it refers to existential anxiety (Angst) as experienced by each individual, as an inevitable result of realizing the human condition. On the other hand, it suggests transcending this anxiety through spontaneity, expressive exaggeration, lighthearted disposition, irony, self-deprecation, and the vibrant color contrasts of pop aesthetics. The black and white elements of the artworks are notably influenced by comic aesthetics, with an intricate composition reminiscent of contemporary metropolises. Streets twist and lead to dead ends. However, the artworks are also inhabited by colorful butterflies, birds, and goldfish, symbolizing the traveler within us. The crow lifting the stone references our consciousness. Clouds and waves, influenced by Japanese art, serve as carriers of the catharsis we all need at some point. Meanwhile, the ships symbolize the disposition for wandering and change, for the new beginnings we all require. The series comprises works created between 2013 and 2015.“.
