Open Call inviting artists to submit works for participation in an international contemporary sculpture exhibition to be held at a gallery in Athens. Interested artists may submit sculptures made from any material (including, but not limited to, marble, granite, cast materials, ceramics, wood, and others), as well as assemblage, ready-made works, and mosaics. The exhibition will accept sculptures displayed on plinths, freestanding floor sculptures, and wall-mounted works.
The exhibition is organised by ARTgrID and conceived & curated by Paris Kapralos.
The official languages of the exhibition are Greek and English. A bilingual commemorative catalogue-book will be published in digital format, and the exhibition will also be available online through the ARTgrID platform for one month.
Accepted artworks. You may submit sculptures, assemblage works, mosaics, and ready-mades suitable for display on the floor, on plinths, or mounted/hung on walls. Please bear in mind that this is an indoor exhibition, so basic size and weight restrictions apply. Specifically:
ⓘ Maximum permitted weight for wall-mounted works: 10 kg
ⓘ Maximum permitted weight for works displayed on plinths: 20 kg
ⓘ Maximum dimensions for freestanding floor sculptures: 220 X 100 X 100 centimetres
The organisers will provide plinths of various heights according to the works selected by the Curator. However, submitting artists must ensure that their sculptures are structurally stable and have suitable bases wherever required. Artists submitting wall-mounted or hanging works must also provide an appropriate hanging mechanism (e.g. wire or another means of suspension from a secure fixing point).
The exhibition has an open theme, and the main selection criteria are the originality of the works and their technical quality.
Conceptual framework. Where does a sculpture end, and where does the space surrounding it begin? “Geometries in the Void” explores contemporary sculpture as a process of organising space, in which matter, volume, light, shadow, and the intervals between them form a unified experience. Empty space assumes an active sculptural role, shaping relationships that change according to the viewer’s position and movement.
The transition from solid, self-contained sculpture to open spatial compositions expanded the possibilities of sculpture. As early as the “Realistic Manifesto” by Naum Gabo and Antoine Pevsner (1920), space and time were recognised as essential elements of artistic creation. Similarly, Rosalind Krauss, in “Sculpture in the Expanded Field” (1979), examines the expansion of sculpture’s boundaries in relation to architecture and landscape.
Abstract and Constructivist structures, biomorphic compositions, assemblages of disparate materials, and practices of creative reuse reveal different interpretations of the relationship between solid form and empty space. Geometry emerges through proportions, asymmetries, cavities, balances, and unexpected encounters between forms. Sculpture engages bodily memory, observation, and imagination, even on a small scale. How much of a sculpture resides in its material, and how much in the space it transforms? And how much of what we see is ultimately created within ourselves?
