Conceptual Framework. The materials of memory are not materials of the past. They are those that persist in the present, that do not withdraw, that resist disappearance. Memory, according to Paul Ricoeur, is an active mechanism of identity construction, narrative and meaning. In his work “La Mémoire, l’Histoire, l’Oubli” (2000), Ricoeur suggests that memory never functions as mere recall, but always through a process of interpretation, reconstruction and partial forgetting. Memory is selective, wounded, liminal. It is, above all, creative. In contrast to a romantic or melancholic reading of the past, each work in the exhibition is expected to function like a palimpsest, and the act of upcycling becomes an inscription of memory on already inscribed surfaces. Equally important are the symbols that are reused in a visual art environment with the rereading of contemporary art: old buildings, monuments, textures, anything indicative of the passage of time like a flowing river. The exhibition “The Materials of Memory” approaches creative reuse as an embodied way of archaeology of everyday life. Old objects, construction fragments, evidence of former uses or experiences become carriers of a silent testimony. In this exhibition, upcycling aims to become performative memory, with creative reuse either in respect to the materials that make up the works or with respect to images and symbols becoming an act of resistance to oblivion through transformation. Art does not remember. Art creates what must be remembered.

About the Exhibition Series “Infinite Forms”. “Infinite Forms” is a series of international exhibitions conceived by visual curator Paris Kapralos that explores the tangible and conceptual recycling of human culture in art. The series began in 2023 and will present one exhibition annually, aiming to showcase artists who produce works of creative reuse and/or whose works explore the redefinition/new meaning of elements and images of Culture to a wider audience.
