Paris Kapralos, art curator, in collaboration with visual artists from Greece and abroad, invites you to visit the exhibition “Dwellings of the Self” and honour with your presence the opening on Thursday 15 January from 19:00 to 22:00.
The exhibition takes place physically in Athens at the art venue Chili Art Gallery (13-15 Dimofontos Street, Thiseio, Athens) and online, in collaboration with ARTgrID.
The exhibition explores the concept of dwelling as a psychic function, where the self forms its own inner space in the face of an unstable world. The visitor will encounter works of painting, sculpture, photography, and digital art, making the visit to the exhibition a unique experience.
It is noted in the curatorial text: “After the “great confinement” of the “Stay at Home” period during the Pandemic, the notion of ‘home’ becomes increasingly detached from its architectural substance and is transformed into a function of the psyche. The dividing lines between private and public, personal and collective, are no longer clear. This exhibition examines, through Art, the psychosocial imprint of confinement today: the internalization of the world, the shift in the meaning of dwelling, the construction of an inner place. Drawing from the concept of the “inland of the self”, as articulated by Paul Valéry, the home reappears as an inner topography of the Self. This inland is now organized as a response to an uncertain, threatening and extremely unpleasant external reality. The construction of an inner world is not a contemplative or poetic process, but a survival mechanism. The internalization of the familiar functions both as protection and isolation. The self is structured as a world – an autonomous, self-sufficient and often impenetrable landscape. A key role in the psychosocial part of this process is played by the impact of technological and networked conditions. The home of the self now functions as an interface. Our gaze is mediated, experience is organized through screens, and the “inside” and the “outside” communicate digitally, not experientially. The individual inhabits a mental system of information and images which they attempt to organize as a real world. The exhibition invites artists to think about the notion of dwelling beyond the material nature of space, as a psychological, existential and symbolic process that permanently changes our relationship with society, with others, and with the world.”
The following visual artists have contributed their works to the exhibition: Dan Jauca, Kostas Michos, Ioana Axente, Efi Mamona, Maria P. Oikonomopoulou, Konstantinos Adamantidis, Anna Fragkaki, Catherine Tsiringouli, Katerina Papaspiliopoulou, Ioannis Stamoulis, Anastasia Chania, Fani Gavriilidou, Maria Papatrecha, Theodora Anagnostopoulou, Amalia Triantafyllou, Evangeli Karangeli, Maria Darla, Giorgos Pistikos, Elina Kehagedaki, Olga Barmazi, Chrysoula Demagkou, Polytimi Balopoulou, Magda Dimoudi, Argyro Karamouzi.
