Palimpsests of Memory at Chili Art Gallery

Thursday, January 9, 2025 – The art curator Paris Kapralos, in collaboration with 24 visual artists from Greece and Cyprus, invites you to visit the exhibition “Memory Palimpsests” and honor the opening with your presence on Thursday January 16, from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

The exhibition, which explores memory as a palimpsest, where the past and present engage in creative dialogue, takes place physically in Athens at Chili Art Gallery (Dimofontos 13-15, Thissio, Athens) and online in collaboration with ARTgrID (https://artgrid.gr).

It is noted in the curatorial text: “Memory is a mechanism that constantly evolves, interacting with the present, like a palimpsest where new layers cover, without erasing, the older ones. In psychology, Sigmund Freud highlighted the modification of every memory when recalled, something art captures through the reinterpretation of the past in the present. Maurice Halbwachs, in sociology, emphasizes the social dimension of memory, underlining how social structures affect how we remember. Art can reveal historical layers and act as a tool for deconstruction, offering alternative narratives, according to Michel Foucault. The artist acts as an ‘archaeologist of memory,’ uncovering layers of time and reinterpreting the past. Thus, memory, like the palimpsest, becomes an open narrative constantly revised, creating new compositions as the personal, collective, and historical merge through art.”

The visitor will see works of painting, digital art, photography, installations, artistic objects, and constructions.

The following visual artists have contributed to the exhibition: Francesca Pinoni, Sofia Atsali, Magda Dimoudi, Chrysoula Demagkou, Yiannis Stamoulis, Zoe Kyko, Karolina Spyropoulou, Valentini Kalfopoulou, Elena Arsenidou, Natalia Kazirelova, Sergis Hatziadamos, Elma Tsarouchi, Eirini Chaleli, Depi Nikolaidou, Anastasia Bozatzis, Petros F. Filippou, Kostas Michos, Vasilis Stathopoulos, Maria Darla, Nemo, Sotirios Sotopoulos, Manolis Dorgiakis, Artemisia Megalou, Stella Pylarinou.
