Ink on Paper 11: An exhibition exploring the expressive possibilities of ink in Art

You are currently viewing Ink on Paper 11: An exhibition exploring the expressive possibilities of ink in Art

Art curator Paris Kapralos, in collaboration with visual artists whose primary medium is ink, invites you to visit the exhibition “Ink on Paper,” the 11th installment of the series bearing the same name. The exhibition takes place physically in Athens from Friday, October 3 to Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Alma Mater art space (62 Emmanouil Benaki Street, Exarchia, Athens), and simultaneously online, in collaboration with ARTgrID.

The exhibition opening will take place on the first day, Friday, October 3, from 19:00 to 22:00. The exhibition features works of painting, drawing, and printmaking.

In his curatorial note, Mr. Kapralos states, among other things:
Ink, or ‘the ink’ as we commonly call it today, is a colored liquid substance used in writing, printing, and painting. It originates from the ancient Greek word ‘melas’ (=black) because the first color ever used was black. If we write that ‘Human history has been written in ink,’ most people will think of books. But far earlier, human memory was painted on cave walls with ink, long before the concept of writing was even invented. A hundred thousand years ago, people painted first and then, gradually, began to write down what needed to be preserved. Since the 15th century, when paper became a common good in Europe, artists adopted it, and the history of paper and ink fused into a bouquet of arts. Today, visual artists produce with great stylistic variety a range of experiments depending on their starting point—works of unique sensitivity, often quite unexpected, surprising in their approach. The international trend of water-soluble ink, colored or black, being used by painters as an alternative to traditional pigments, along with the availability of excellent handmade and industrial papers from around the globe for printmakers and painters, makes the approach to the art of ink on paper one of the most refreshed and exciting paths in contemporary visual art.

Participating visual artists:
Andreas Sinopoulos, Olga Barmazi, Giorgos Valvis, Kony Zervou, Alexios Demelis, Chryssa Tsovili, Sotiris Dandanas, Dimitris Galanakis, Chryssa Teliou, Ioannis Vlachos, Pepi Karagiannaki, Mary Poulakou, Panagiota Outsiou.

Opening Hours / Days: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 19:00 to 22:00. On other days, visits are by appointment only via +30 6972445353. Free entrance.

About the “Ink on Paper” Initiative
“Ink on Paper” is an action platform founded in 2019 by art curator Paris Kapralos, with the goal of promoting visual artists who use ink and paper as their primary expressive media. Since 2024, the initiative has established a community of artists creating works in painting, drawing, printmaking, and other ink-related techniques such as watercolor, Chinese ink, and calligraphy, among others. Alongside this, it organizes workshops, masterclasses, and live demonstrations. The initiative maintains an official website supported by ARTgrID, which acts as a repository of its actions and activities and a virtual showcase of its official artist community. The “Ink on Paper” community also maintains an active presence on social media, with an official Facebook page sharing news, announcements, educational content, and more.
