Thursday, August 28, 2025 – The community of the initiative Ink on Paper, which promotes visual artists whose main means of expression are ink and paper, welcomes as a new member the visual artist Giorgos Vasileiou.
Giorgos Vasileiou was born in Alexandroupoli, Northern Greece, where he continues to live and work. He showed great interest in the visual arts from an early age. He took his first steps with lessons in ceramics and painting. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Ioannina, where he discovered printmaking, focusing mainly on woodcut and etching, under the guidance of Professor Christodoulos Galdemis. Within the framework of the Graphic Arts Conferences organized in collaboration with the University of Ioannina and the Museum of Typography of Ioannina, he had the opportunity to teach the principles of printmaking. After graduating, he returned to his hometown, where he set up his own printmaking workshop, both to continue his own artistic activity and to teach the art of printmaking to others. Giorgos Vasileiou has participated in 11 group exhibitions and art competitions and has organized one solo exhibition.
In his artist’s statement, he notes: «All the works I present are printmaking works, specifically woodcuts, both black and white and colored. All my works are carved and printed by hand. The first and main thematic unit I began working on is heroic fantasy, with themes inspired by mythology, Greek and European, as well as fantasy literature. I do not aim at the illustrative depiction of specific characters but at the archetypal presentation of imaginary creatures and landscapes. In the second phase of my creative journey, I expanded into rendering landscapes, exploring methods of depicting various structural and natural elements through woodcut techniques. My goal is not only to capture each subject but to enrich the work with the greatest possible variety of carvings. The work is not only about the depicted elements but also about the artist’s ability to create it, enrich it, and continue to evolve it.».
