Infinite Forms 4: The materials of memory

Art Curator Paris Kapralos, in collaboration with visual artists from Greece and abroad, presents the exhibition “Infinite Forms 4: The Materials of Memory”. The exhibition takes place physically in Athens at Chili Art Gallery (13–15 Dimofontos Str., Thissio, Athens) and simultaneously online, in collaboration with ARTgrID.

The present online edition of the exhibition will remain on view until 14 April 2026.

The exhibition explores creative memory as a process of reuse, in which materials, symbols and images of culture are re-signified as palimpsests of identity and collective experience.

The materials of memory are not materials of the past. They are those that persist in the present, that do not withdraw, that resist disappearance. Memory, according to Paul Ricoeur, constitutes an active mechanism in the construction of identity, narrative and meaning. In his work “La Mémoire, l’Histoire, l’Oubli” (2000), Ricoeur suggests that memory never functions as a simple act of recall, but always through a process of interpretation, reconstruction and partial forgetting. Memory is creative. In contrast to a romantic or melancholic reading of the past, the aim is for each work in the exhibition to function as a palimpsest. Equally significant are the symbols that are reused within a visual context through the re-reading of contemporary art: old buildings, monuments, textures—everything that signifies the passing of time, as a river flows onward. The exhibition “The Materials of Memory” approaches creative reuse either as an upcycling practice or conceptually, as an embodied form of archaeology of everyday life. Old objects, fragments of construction, traces of former uses or lived experiences, and their images / visual representations become carriers of a silent testimony. Art does not remember. Art creates what must be remembered.
