Aella Morphea is a visual artist who graduated with distinction from the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at the School of Fine Arts, with experience in art education and ceramics. For the past ten years, she has used photography to explore philosophical, existential and sociopolitical concepts. Drawing on Nan Goldin’s autobiographical gaze and Roger Ballen’s psychological surrealism, she incorporates painting and clay into the photographic medium. Her work begins with a realistic documentation of the world and gradually shifts towards expressionism. Her practice is an ongoing exploration of self-created universes and hidden selves, from which other symbolic characters have also emerged. In her recent installation in a group exhibition in Athens (2026), she disrupts the detachment of the gallery space by drawing the viewer into the frame. At the same time, as part of a new research project, she shares the camera with the people she photographs, relinquishing the artist’s authority in favour of an equal, shared experience.
