The exhibition explores the existential impact of digital flattening, focusing on the distortion of experience, depth, duration, and emotional resonance through the detachment from the physical experience of things and relationships.
You may submit works of painting, printmaking, photography, digital art, collage, and video art.
Art Curator Paris Kapralos presents the exhibition “The Fear of Flat Reality” and invites visual artists to submit their works for participation. The physical exhibition will be hosted at Chili Art Gallery in Athens and will also be available online on our platform, running for one month.
Conceptual framework. In the post-digital world, in the age of hyperconnectivity where daily experience is mediated by countless devices and is understood almost exclusively as a form of digital content, nothing is more important than anything else, and nothing lasts. The overwhelming production and circulation of images, information, and opinion contributes to a new kind of cultural flattening. Everything tends to be presented as equally important, nullifying the possibility of hierarchy, depth, or evaluation. The theory of saturated sensory experience, as articulated by Neil Postman, intersects with the contemporary psychological analysis of “shallow attention” by Nicholas Carr, outlining a condition in which the mind is unable to retain, process, or interpret the stimuli it receives. The flattening of the world is not only aesthetic or semiotic, but deeply existential: experience is fragmented, duration is abolished, and bonds are replaced by the worship of the latest moment. The exhibition “The Fear of a Flattened Reality” explores the impact of the digital world on the way individuals experience time, perception, the self, others, human relationships, and reality itself.
