Saturday, July 5, 2025 – Painter Maria Dimitriou is the newest member of the “Color in the Water” community, dedicated to promoting visual artists whose primary medium of expression is watercolor.
Maria Dimitriou graduated from the Theoretical Department of Graphic Arts at the 1st Technical School of Limassol in 2014. She then pursued a one-year study at the Steiglitz State Academy of Art and Design in Saint Petersburg, focusing mainly on academic drawing. In 2019, she earned a BA in Fine Arts from the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, and in 2024 she completed her Master’s degree in Art History and Theory from the Cyprus University of Technology. Maria Dimitriou works in both sculpture and painting, and her work has been exhibited in Cyprus, the UK, and Russia.
In an artistic statement accompanying the announcement of her joining the community, Ms. Dimitriou notes: “I consistently explore the themes of womanhood, the female nature, and my own figures, which are often characterized by disproportions in measurement. In the past three years, I’ve focused more on intense colors with unusual combinations. Additionally, through personal research, I try to discreetly incorporate elements of Cypriot tradition into my drawings using traditional patterns found in embroidery or archaeological artifacts. With a strong desire to experiment with different materials, I came into contact with aquarella, which I found to be a fascinating challenge for expressing my creations with clarity and vibrant colors.”
