Sunday, October 20, 2024 – The community of the initiative Ink On Paper, which highlights visual artists whose primary media of expression are ink and paper, announces the participation of Spyros Dombris.
Spyros Dombris was born in Larissa in July 1997 and is originally from Tyrnavos. He specializes in the field of economics and management. He is a self-taught painter whose main medium is ink. His life in the Thessalian countryside has shaped—and continues to shape—the way he captures his works. In his sketches, one can discern surreal undertones, through which he seeks to transcend the boundaries of reality, adding depth and meaning to landscapes and figures.
In an artistic statement, he notes about his work: “Working with ink gives me the opportunity for multifaceted expression, without constraints on lines and forms. In my drawings, the concrete often communicates with the abstract, creating an imaginative field of magical realism. Strange anthropomorphic characters, dark entities, and figures from the subconscious and dreams vividly narrate their own story. Often, the scene is complemented by an intense botanical backdrop. My works are dominated by strong shading, attention to detail, and the psychological depiction of emotions in each figure’s face. Through my drawings, I aim to capture the threshold of a lost childhood innocence, within which lies the dramatic and often shadowy setting of a paradoxical or even eerie emotion. My primary influences stem from memories of my childhood, from myths and stories of the Thessalian countryside, as well as from international cartoonists.”
