Saturday, September 21, 2024 – Visual artist Vasiliki Deftereou, originally from Ithaca, is the newest member of the emerging community on the action platform Ink On Paper, which highlights visual artists who primarily use ink and paper as their means of expression.

Vasiliki Deftereou was born in 1997 and grew up on the island of Ithaca. She studied at the National Technical University of Athens and holds a degree in Architectural Engineering. She is currently enrolled in the postgraduate program “Research in Architecture” at NTUA and works as an architect. From an early age, she showed interest in painting and theater, particularly in designing and constructing sets. She has participated in various workshops and visual art exhibitions, and since 2015 has taken on roles as set and costume designer for theatrical productions and ensembles. During the summers of 2017, 2018, and 2019, she was involved in theater making for three different theatrical performances in Ithaca, and she has also worked in costume design for short films.

In her artistic statement, she emphasizes about her work: “The body of work I present here consists of compositions—or better yet, co-existences—of fragments from different orders. Human parts, fragments of landscapes, both natural and man-made, natural objects and artifacts. These are commentaries on my contemporary experience that I attempt to guide, through the properties of the material—ink—into unexpected co-existences. Because it is the material, the worlds and atmospheres of ink, that allows the individual entities to relate through their differences. Perhaps this intention lies at the core of my work. The terms by which things that differ—and in the contemporary fragmented world everything differs—may come into coexistence, without, however, sacrificing their uniqueness.”
