The New Normal 4: The silence of Nature

Art Curator Paris Kapralos, in collaboration with visual artists from Greece and abroad, invites you to visit the exhibition “New Normal 4: The Silence of Nature” and to honor the opening with your presence on Thursday, June 5th, from 19:00 to 22:00.

The exhibition takes place physically in Athens at Chili Art Gallery (13–15 Dimofontos St., Thiseio, Athens) and simultaneously online in partnership with ARTgrID (https://artgrid.gr).

The exhibition explores the transformation of the human relationship with the natural environment through the lens of loss, resilience, and hope, highlighting the role of art as a bearer of memory and awareness in an era of ecological crisis.

Visitors will experience a diverse range of painting, sculpture, photography, and video art works, making the visit a truly unique experience.

As noted in the curatorial text: “What did it mean to grow up in Greece surrounded by mountains, olive trees, and the sea? For a teenager in the 1990s, it meant independence, play, and fearless contact with nature. For a child today, however, the answer is different: it means heatwaves that impose restrictions, forests reduced to ash, beaches littered with plastics, jellyfish, and invasive marine species migrating to the Mediterranean due to violent climate change.

The notion of ‘resilience’ is no longer theoretical—it is a daily reality. The innocence we once knew is no longer a given. Children growing up in Greece in 2025 form their experiences in an environment that is no longer considered stable, but fragile and volatile. Climate is not just a matter for the weather report; it is often a matter of survival. World Environment Day is not just a date on the calendar, but a mirror reflecting the transformations of the world—and of childhood itself.

If this day holds meaning, it is because it invites us to reflect on what future we are offering our children—not with guilt, but with responsibility. To protect what remains and rebuild what has been lost. Because nature is no longer a given; and if we want it to exist tomorrow, we must act today.

Within this context, the role of the visual artist is not merely to depict reality, but to express its silence, awaken collective consciousness, and open dialogues where silence or loss prevail. Art today is called to act as a gesture of memory, responsibility, and imagination.”
