Friday, April 4, 2025<\/strong> \u2013 Visual artist Maria Zavitsanou is the newest member of the “Color in the Water<\/a><\/strong>” community, dedicated to promoting visual artists whose primary medium of expression is watercolor.<\/p>

Maria Zavitsanou was born in Athens in 1975. In 1999, she began her studies at the \u201cPietro Vannucci\u201d Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia, Italy, where she studied painting in the studio of Sauro Cardinali and graphic arts with Marilena Scavizzi and Wilma Lok. In 2004, she graduated from the Academy with distinction and honors. That same year, she began her postgraduate studies at the same Academy in visual arts and performing arts sciences, specializing in graphic arts. She completed her Master\u2019s degree in 2007 with distinction and honors. During this time, she also contributed to the illustration of a poetry collection by the Italian poet Sandro Penna.<\/p>

Since September 2009, she has been working as a visual arts educator. She is a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece (EETE) as well as the Association of Greek Engravers. Her works are held in permanent collections in the Czech Republic (Rokycany) and Japan (Kiwa). She has participated in numerous exhibitions in Greece and abroad. In 2008, she took part in the IV International Biennale of Graphic Arts in Rokycany, Czech Republic, where she was honored with the Cena M\u011bsta Rokycany award.<\/p>

In an artistic statement accompanying the announcement of her joining the community, Ms. Zavitsanou notes:
\u201cNon-verbal communication is something I seek to highlight in my work, as it is a form of contact with others that is often more direct, essential, and sincere than any other way. Simplicity also plays an important role in my expression, as I always strive to convey what I feel with as few elements as possible\u2014perhaps only the absolutely necessary, if I manage it. Emotion is my main guide, as only when I truly feel can I express myself artistically. In this pursuit, watercolor is my ally, as it is a medium that, by nature, demands simplicity while also offering, through the multiple layers of color it creates, intensely lyrical qualities.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>
